Well, my croaky voice from last week is now full-blown laryngitis. :)

I am going to cancel classes Monday night and Tuesday morning, in the hopes that a little rest will make me all better.

Just a thought …
If you brought a friend for Bring a Friend week, and they were considering returning this week – would you please drop them a line or give them a call.

Sorry for the inconvenience,

Are you ready? The time is almost here to climb those 39 steps to Joy-ville!

This blog should keep you updated as to the goings on at the studio. Couple things...

KITS - only a few families have paid for their kits at this point. To save on (ridiculously exorbitant) shipping costs I am going to try to order all the kits at one time. We will shoot to have the kits by the middle of the second week.

CALENDAR -Printable version at the top of the middle column. Scrolling Version to the right. It has the complete listing for the entire semester.

STUDIO POLICIES - listed at the bottom of the page. These will answer most ?'s.
BOOK FAIR (Sept 13-20) - The book fair will be set up at the studio. We accept cash, checks, and credit cards. You get to shop there and take your books home. Come browse 1/2 hour before and after every class and by appointment

SANDY SLUSSER PHOTOGRAPHY (Nov 6&7) - see below this post for samples and link to FAQ sheet.

I'm really looking forward to the semester. These themes are among my favorites, so get ready for "Milk and Cookies" and "Hello Weather, Let's Play Together"

WOW it's HOT

This week's Summer Camps will be postponed

While the move to the lower level has helped to provide a more comfortable climate - it is not air conditioned.  The extreme heat that is forecasted for this week will make even our cooler lower-level digs HOT.

Many little ones get irritable in weather that is this warm, and I personally know a grown up that can get a bit irritable too (no one wants to see Miss Ann lose it). So in the interest of everyone's comfort and enjoyment I'm going to check the calendar out and try to find a time to reschedule.  If the rescheduled time does not suit your calendar, I will happily refund your money.

Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions: 274-2311

The Marshmallow Test

I love Dr Judy Willis.  She is a neurologist and a 6th grade teacher; she keeps a foot in both worlds to help all of us better understand the best way to help our children learn.  Please check out the youtube video (at the bottom of this page), and then consider how you can help your child learn to delay gratification... waiting turns for the parachute is a really great start :)

Our Kindermusik Family

You may have already gotten the impression that I truly view us all as an extended family.  It means something to me that we are all (at least for these class times) raising our kids together in this small Kindermusik Community. I cherish all of our families and enjoy our differences.  Having said that... one of my favorite big sisters of a Kindermusik Kid is doing amazing things that I want you to know about - so that you can be as proud of her as her Mom, Sheila and I are.  Perhaps you'll even decide to lend her a hand.

Vanessa has been invited (after a rigorous interview process) to travel abroad as a People to People Ambassador. I won't go into all the details - you can google it, but it's a huge deal and a tremendous honor, that she MORE THAN DESERVES.

Vanessa is a wonderful role model for her little sister Qyn, other young girls, and quite frankly, all of us - she has a patriotic spirit and tremendous love for our country and regularly offers service to her community.

Your kind thoughts and well wishes posted as comments below are all ask for her, but if you feel like you may want to do more, she is having a Basket Bingo fundraiser for her trip (see below) or you can simply offer a donation by contacting her mother Sheila:

Get Up and Go

Our Time Families: When we move around the room to "Riding the Rails" we are hoping that the children will analyze the tone of the music and adjust accordingly; fast and excited, then slow and smooth.  Additionally, our young movers are developing in other ways:"Bodily movements often carry strong psychological meanings. With young children in particular, motion conveys emotion more powerfully than words. In the second year of life, motion is centered on the achievement of balance, and the risk of losing this balance becomes a central concern. Physical balance stands as a symbol for emotional balance, in child play as well as in adult imagery." The Emotional Life of the Toddler, by Alicia F. Lieberman

Group music classes proven beneficial

A recent study called “Effects of Parent/Child Group Music Activities on Toddler Development: A Pilot Study” turned up in the journal Music Therapy Perspectives.

Conducted out of Florida State by Standley, Walworth, and Nguyen, its goal was to assess whether structured group music activities have an effect, either positive or negative, on toddlers between 12 and 24 months old. As well, the study group combined children at typical developmental stages with those who were considered at risk of developmental delays.

Did the study get results? Well, let’s just post a quote:

“Results showed that participation in four to seven music sessions significantly increased higher level developmental skills. Significantly more children in the music group demonstrated higher level music and cognitive skills than did those in the control group.”

The study goes on to recommend that...
"Future research should pursue these findings with larger sample sizes and consider long term implications."

We certainly hope they pursue a longer term study. We at Kindermusik believe the results will be just as encouraging! It’s no secret that music is important to children’s development. But what this study adds to the mix is that structured group music activities appear to have measurable benefits.

Music is food for children’s brains. We want their brains to grow big and fat, right? So make sure you’re stuffing them full of music—and for some extra vitamins, try doing it in a structured group setting.

Many thanks to Kindermusik educator Michelle Jacques for finding this research and bringing it to my attention.

Kindermusik Provides a Foundation for Success

“The nation’s top business executives agree that arts education programs can help repair weaknesses in American education and better prepare workers for the 21st century.”-”The Changing Workplace is Changing Our View of Education”, BusinessWeek

At Kindermusik with Ann Czeponis we realize that music enhances the development of the whole child.  It is not our intention to create musicians, rather we create learners, explorers, and leaders.  This good beginning never ends.
